Karla Deane is an Associate in Maurice Blackburn’s Brisbane class actions practice.

Karla graduated with Honours in Law and a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Queensland in 2010 and was admitted as a lawyer the following year. Karla is also fluent in German and holds a Zertifikat Deutsch from Goethe Institute.

Karla is currently working on the Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda class actions. She previously worked on the equine influenza class action, the baby Ferouz social justice case, and the bladder cancer group action associated with the ActosTM diabetes drug. Before joining the firm, Karla worked as a paralegal and trainee solicitor with Queensland law firms, and as a Senior Policy Advisor in the office of the Queensland Premier. She then practised as a solicitor with a Sydney law firm for two years, before moving back to Queensland to join Maurice Blackburn in 2014.

Karla possesses significant skills in civil litigation, dispute resolution, legal policy and government matters. She is passionate about achieving the optimum outcome for clients, and increasing access to justice and legal representation in the wider community. She cites a commitment to community-led outcomes for overcoming injustice as her principal influence in choosing to study law.

“At a professional and personal level, I am driven by the hope of increasing access to good quality legal representation. I find it immensely rewarding to be able to solve complex legal problems that affect large groups of people, some of whom might not be able to otherwise obtain legal assistance,” says Karla.

Karla is on the board of the Climate Action Network Australia. She was previously the Maurice Blackburn Women's Network Women in the Firm committee chair, assisted in developing a network of volunteers for an asylum seeker clinic, volunteered with the Women’s Legal Service Queensland for three years, and was on the New South Wales Young Lawyers Civil Litigation Committee for two years.
