Mr Fluffy - Canberra asbestos contamination
It's been more than 20 years since loose fill asbestos insulation was removed from 1,049 Canberra homes under a $100 million government program, but contamination issues remain. Loose fill asbestos is different to other forms of asbestos as it friable and the particles are frequently disseminated right through wall, ceiling and roof cavities and into heating and cooling systems. There are also an unknown number of properties in Queanbeyan and NSW that still contain the original amount of Mr Fluffy asbestos. Many people have had to leave their homes, others have been demolished.
Since the Taskforce was established in June, the priority has been making contact with current residents of affected homes; delivering the ACT Government’s emergency support package; and arranging asbestos assessments on affected home.
On 12 August, 2014, an expert and community reference group was also announced by the government to guide the work of the government.
The For Renewal group is advocating on behalf of those affected and can provide detailed information on supports available including emergency financial support.
Our asbestos team is supporting the group and exploring legal options so that affected residents and homeowners can recover any financial losses, or get help if they have an asbestos related disease associated with asbestos exposure.
